Ukraine’s long-range strikes reshape the war beyond its borders

Since the outbreak of the conflict over four years ago, the war in Ukraine has intensified with relentless Russian aerial bombardments devastating both its territory and economy. In response, Kiev has adopted a bold strategy of long-range strikes deep inside Russia, fundamentally altering the aerospace dynamics of the conflict.

Disrupting Moscow’s war machine at its core

The Ukrainian military’s approach is twofold: targeting military installations and crippling critical infrastructure to stifle Moscow’s war efforts. Refineries, fuel depots, and energy facilities across Russia have become primary objectives. By doing so, Kiev aims to sever the supply chains feeding Russian troops on the front lines while simultaneously weakening Russia’s economic capacity to sustain prolonged combat operations—a nation heavily reliant on hydrocarbon exports.

Drones breach Moscow’s defenses: A dual threat

Although the outskirts of Moscow frequently experience drone incursions, the capital itself remains a rare but strategically significant target. Located over 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the city boasts a robust air defense network. Yet, even sporadic drone attacks on the capital carry immense weight.

Beyond the physical damage—often minimal—the psychological and logistical impact is profound. Such strikes erode public confidence in national security while forcing the Russian military to divert critical anti-air systems, including Pantsir and S-400 units, away from frontline operations to protect key strategic hubs.

Ukraine’s technological endurance: A shift in warfare

This escalation underscores a pivotal evolution in the conflict: Ukraine’s pivot toward a technologically driven war of attrition. By leveraging domestically produced long-range drones, Kiev demonstrates its ability to project force deep into enemy territory. The message is unmistakable—despite relentless Russian assaults, Ukraine now possesses the means to impose a costly, sustained burden on its adversary, extending the battlefield far beyond conventional frontlines.
