The « March towards 2029 » patriotic walk in Dakar took an unexpected turn this past Sunday, as organizers and participants faced significant challenges that disrupted the event’s intended flow.

Unplanned disruptions overshadow patriotic rally
The walk, which drew strong attendance, quickly became a test of organization as the sheer volume of enthusiastic participants overwhelmed initial logistical plans. Traffic bottlenecks and crowd control issues emerged along the route, making it difficult to maintain order and security throughout the event.
These challenges had direct consequences on the participation of key figures. Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister and prominent political leader, left the event prematurely due to the chaotic conditions and insufficient crowd management observed on site.
Dakar’s mayor addresses the aftermath
Abass Fall, Mayor of Dakar and the event’s main organizer, later addressed the situation publicly. He expressed disappointment over the incidents, attributing them to a lack of discipline among some participants. In a statement, he emphasized that passion for a cause must be balanced with responsible behavior to ensure the success of future mobilizations.
The mayor called for stricter crowd management protocols and greater self-regulation among participants, especially during high-attendance political gatherings. He warned that without these improvements, similar disruptions could recur at future events.
« Enthusiasm is important, but it must be guided by wisdom, » he stated, reflecting on the incidents that marred the walk.
Political mobilization under scrutiny
The walk was part of a series of mobilizations organized by the PASTEF, a political party known for its strong grassroots support in Senegal. The slogan « March towards 2029 » signaled a broader push to consolidate political momentum ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
While the party’s ability to mobilize large crowds remains evident, the Dakar incident highlights growing concerns about maintaining order and ensuring safety during such events. The outcome has sparked discussions within political circles about the need for better planning and participant accountability in future rallies.
