UN pushes for consensus and fundamental rights in DRC national dialogue
During a session at the United Nations Security Council, the head of MONUSCO, James Swan, delivered a firm political message to the authorities in Kinshasa. He called upon all Congolese political and social actors to reach a common understanding regarding the framework for an inclusive national dialogue. Furthermore, he emphasized the critical need to safeguard civic space and protect fundamental rights, particularly the freedoms of assembly and expression, to ensure all participants can engage in a secure and peaceful environment.
This diplomatic appeal comes at a time of heightened tension, as the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains deeply polarized over potential constitutional changes. The urgency of the situation was underscored by recent incidents, including an attack on the CENCO headquarters by individuals identified as supporters of the ruling power in Kinshasa.
Regarding the country’s security landscape, the UN envoy highlighted positive steps, including the establishment of a national commission dedicated to reforming the security sector. He also noted the ongoing finalization of the nation’s first comprehensive security policy, an initiative currently being directed by the presidency.
