UNESCO joins launch of 27th environment fortnight in Bamako, Mali

This 27th edition aims to unite national efforts to strengthen community awareness on preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

The UNESCO office in Mali participated in the official launch ceremony of the 27th edition of the Environment Fortnight, held in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The organisation’s delegation was led by its representative, Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Minister of State, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Alousséni Sanou, representing the Prime Minister and head of government. It brought together several government members, the environment ministers from the AES Confederation states (Burkina Faso and Niger), along with representatives of national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society, the private sector, and the media.

This 27th edition seeks to rally national initiatives to boost community awareness about preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

Scheduled from June 5 to 15, 2026, the event revolves around two major themes:

  • “The climate crisis and solutions for a safer, more resilient, and more sustainable future,” linked to World Environment Day;

  • “Pastures: recognize, respect, restore,” referencing the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

Through its participation, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment alongside the Government of Mali to strengthen awareness, promote good environmental practices, and support the implementation of concrete actions for sustainable and resilient development.
