Young activists shape democratic change in Kinshasa

Young activists set conditions for constitutional reform in Kinshasa

Young activists gathered in Kinshasa to voice their demands for constitutional reform conditions

A dynamic youth movement in Kinshasa has taken center stage in the national debate surrounding constitutional reforms, holding a press conference that outlined their position on the matter.

Three essential conditions for constitutional reform

The movement, Nouvelle Génération Congolaise, emphasized that any constitutional reform must meet three critical conditions: demonstrable necessity, broad national consensus, and a peaceful political climate.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mukenge Totoro, their spokesperson, highlighted the importance of addressing key questions before proceeding with any reform:

“Why amend the Constitution now? What specific problems will this change solve? How will this reform tangibly improve the lives of Congolese citizens? Who stands to benefit most: the Nation or certain political actors? How can we ensure this reform strengthens democracy rather than serving special interests? Until these questions receive clear, transparent, and convincing answers, the debate will continue to fuel mistrust and division.”

Calling for a responsible and engaged youth

The activists stressed that Congolese youth must reject being used as mere political tools. Instead, they urged young people to become a force for reflection, constructive proposals, citizen oversight, and national transformation.

Regarding the opposition-led “ville morte” (dead city) protest, the movement acknowledged it as a legitimate right to demand change. However, they emphasized the need for all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, ideas, and constructive reforms over confrontation.

With the political landscape in Kinshasa remaining tense, the youth movement’s stance underscores their commitment to shaping a more inclusive and transparent democratic process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
