France’s stance on Cameroon’s 2025 presidential election: no public congratulations from Macron

The aftermath of Cameroon’s October 2025 presidential election has sparked diplomatic curiosity in Paris. While France has traditionally sent formal congratulations following similar events in previous years, the Élysée Palace chose a markedly different approach this time. The absence of a public letter from President Macron has prompted questions about the state of relations between Cameroon and France.

Sylvain Riquier, France’s Ambassador to Cameroon, addressed these concerns during an appearance on the television program La Vérité en face broadcast from Douala. Speaking to journalist Duval Fangwa, Riquier acknowledged the absence of a public congratulatory letter but emphasized that this did not signal a deterioration in bilateral ties.

Cameroon and France: a relationship built on cooperation

« I don’t recall seeing any public letter. You would have noticed it as well, » Riquier stated, deflecting direct criticism while underscoring the robustness of Cameroon-France relations. The Ambassador went on to explain that the election’s outcome did not hinder ongoing cooperation between the two nations, despite the lack of a formal acknowledgment from Paris.

« Yaoundé and Paris remain strong partners, » he continued. « We have confirmed that the election took place as scheduled. This does not prevent us from maintaining normal relations with the authorities. I am here, and my Cameroonian counterpart is in Paris. »

Diplomatic exchanges continue beyond election seasons

Riquier clarified that while no public letter was issued, this did not imply any strain in the relationship. « There is no doubt about our cooperation. The absence of a public letter does not prevent normal relations between our two states, governments, and presidents. » He added that the French President may have simply deemed a public statement unnecessary, as diplomatic exchanges—including letters exchanged during national celebrations—continue unabated.

The Ambassador’s remarks reflect France’s cautious approach to public diplomacy in the context of Cameroon’s electoral process, prioritizing substance over symbolic gestures.
