Bénin and Nigeria strengthen ties in landmark diplomatic visit

The newly elected President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, received a high-profile welcome in Nigeria on June 1st as he embarked on his first official foreign trip since taking office. Arriving in Lagos, the political capital of Africa’s largest economy, Wadagni was greeted at Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State.

In an official statement, Bénin’s Presidency highlighted the significance of the gesture, noting that “the solemnity of this reception reflects the strong commitment of Nigerian authorities to the emergence of Bénin’s new leadership and the renewal it represents”.

During his brief stay, President Wadagni held extensive discussions with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his Nigerian counterpart, at the State House in Abuja. The meeting focused on key areas of bilateral cooperation—including security, trade, and regional integration—conducted in an atmosphere of mutual trust and shared vision, according to the Bénin Presidency.

Long-standing partners, Bénin and Nigeria have maintained deep interdependent ties across economic, cultural, and security domains for decades. This visit is framed as a pivotal moment to reinforce and expand the Cotonou-Abuja partnership, as outlined by Bénin’s leadership.

The trip underscores a broader strategic shift in Bénin’s foreign policy under the leadership of its 49-year-old President. Described by officials as a “diplomacy of proximity”, the approach prioritizes proactive engagement and collective sovereignty-building within West Africa.

As Nigeria’s economy dominates the region, it serves as Bénin’s top trading partner—an interdependence that shapes the latter’s agricultural and service-driven economy. The visit signals a commitment to strengthening this critical relationship.
