Senegal parliament president advocates panafrican unity at union session

Dakar hosts pivotal pan-african parliamentary gathering

Dakar is set to become the epicenter of African parliamentary diplomacy as it prepares to host the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the Pan-African Parliamentary Union on June 3-4, 2026. With just one day remaining before delegates from across the continent arrive, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has issued a powerful call for enhanced continental cooperation.

The event, which will bring together over 100 parliamentarians from sixteen African nations, marks Sonko’s first major international leadership engagement since his historic election to the Assembly’s presidency on May 26, 2026, where he secured 99.25% of the vote in a near-unanimous mandate.

a renewed commitment to shared african values

In a message addressed to fellow parliamentarians, Sonko emphasized the critical importance of strengthening parliamentary collaboration at this pivotal moment for the continent. “As Africa faces multifaceted challenges, the need for robust parliamentary cooperation has never been more pressing,” he stated. “I firmly believe the continent’s future will be shaped by Africans themselves—through respect for our shared values, collective aspirations, and strategic interests.”

The Senegalese assembly leader underscored his deep personal commitment to the panafrican ideal, describing it as a legacy passed down through generations that remains central to Africa’s ongoing journey toward unity and progress. His remarks come at a time when the continent is navigating complex geopolitical and economic landscapes, making this parliamentary forum particularly significant.

Sonko’s election to the Assembly’s presidency in late May—marked by an unprecedented 132 out of 133 votes—reflects strong parliamentary support for his vision of a more integrated and self-reliant Africa. The upcoming session in Dakar is widely seen as an opportunity to translate this vision into actionable strategies that can benefit all member states.
