Gabon’s President Oligui Nguema to visit France in July 2026

Gabon’s Head of State, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, has confirmed plans for an official visit to France on 20 July 2026, marking another step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

The announcement, made during an interview, underscores Libreville’s commitment to deepening cooperation across key sectors. While specific agenda items remain undisclosed, the visit is expected to build on ongoing high-level discussions initiated after Gabon’s transition period concluded. Discussions will likely focus on economic collaboration, environmental protection, Congo Basin forest initiatives, training programs, and shared security challenges.

Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has made one prior official trip to France. That visit, from 27 to 31 May 2024, culminated in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. The two leaders used the occasion to revitalize partnerships in trade, governance, and environmental conservation—with a particular emphasis on biodiversity preservation and climate action.

During the 2024 visit, a major Franco-Gabonese economic forum drew nearly 600 business leaders to Paris. Delegations also engaged with Gabonese expatriates, reinforcing cultural and economic connections. The upcoming July 2026 visit will be the second official state trip by the Gabonese leader to France.

France’s recent engagement with Gabon

Emmanuel Macron has visited Gabon twice since 2017, most recently in November 2025, when he attended the One Forest Summit. The two-day visit from 23 to 24 November highlighted France’s support for Gabon’s transition to democratic governance. Macron was personally greeted at Léon-Mba International Airport by President Oligui Nguema, symbolizing a renewed partnership built on mutual respect and equality.

The summit reaffirmed joint commitments in several areas: professional training for Gabonese security forces, the establishment of a natural resource protection academy, and upgrades to the Transgabonais railway network. These initiatives reflect a broader strategy to align Gabon’s development goals with international standards.

With the 20 July 2026 visit, President Oligui Nguema reaffirms Gabon’s dedication to fostering a balanced and forward-looking relationship with France—following the May 2024 Paris meetings and November 2025 Libreville talks, the diplomatic rhythm between the two countries continues to intensify.
