The World Bank has officially greenlit a significant $150 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to ensure the uninterrupted provision of vital health and education services across Mali. This crucial funding initiative aims to directly confront the complex climatic, security, and economic hurdles that have impacted the nation in recent years.
Dubbed the Emergency Access to Essential Services in Mali Project, this initiative is set to bolster the continuous operation of both national and regional healthcare facilities. It will achieve this by covering operational expenses, guaranteeing the supply of crucial vaccines and essential medicines, and offering complimentary healthcare services to women of reproductive age and children under five. Furthermore, the project will enhance the capabilities of health personnel, equipping them to manage the escalating health risks exacerbated by climate change. Within the educational sector, the project will provide support throughout students’ academic journeys, facilitating the distribution of learning materials, extending school grants to the most vulnerable learners, and organizing national examinations effectively.
This strategic undertaking plays a pivotal role in advancing the World Bank Group’s employment agenda, primarily by safeguarding the nation’s invaluable human capital.
“By maintaining access to critical health and education provisions during a period of severe budgetary constraints, this project actively preserves the pool of future workers and their productive potential,” articulated Clara de Sousa, the World Bank Group’s Division Director for Mali. “Healthy, educated children, alongside healthy mothers, form the bedrock of a resilient and productive workforce.”
The project is projected to positively impact 2.3 million beneficiaries who will gain access to fundamental health services, with specific attention directed towards 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under the age of five. In the realm of education, an impressive 1.1 million students are slated to receive academic support and access to national examinations under standardized conditions, thereby fostering educational continuity and the ongoing development of human capital.
This operation is designed to complement and strengthen the efforts of existing development partners, drawing upon extensive consultations and dedicated coordination frameworks to ensure its efficient and cohesive implementation across Mali.
