Burkina Faso ends diplomatic ties with France: diplomats return home from Paris

Ouagadougou Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Paris: Twelve Diplomats Return Following Rift

In a bold move to terminate its diplomatic relationship with France, Burkina Faso has officially shuttered its embassy in Paris. The twelve Burkinabè diplomats stationed in the French capital have since returned to Ouagadougou, where they were greeted by Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré upon their arrival.

During the reception, the diplomats formally handed over Burkina Faso’s national flag, which had flown above the embassy, along with the keys to the premises. This ceremonial act symbolised the definitive end of Burkina Faso’s diplomatic representation in France. Officials have also refuted claims that any of the diplomats had sought asylum in another country.

The rupture follows Burkina Faso’s announcement on June 26 of a full severance of diplomatic relations with France. As part of a reciprocal measure, French diplomats were compelled to leave Burkina Faso in early July, while the Burkinabè representatives were given a clear deadline to vacate French territory.

The Burkinabè government has defended its decision by citing what it calls France’s « persistent interference » with Burkina Faso’s sovereign interests. Paris, however, has condemned the move as « unjustified and unwarranted, » expressing disappointment over the worsening of bilateral ties.

Shifting Alliances: Burkina Faso’s New Diplomatic Direction

This diplomatic split is part of a larger transformation that began after Captain Ibrahim Traoré rose to power in September 2022. Since then, Burkina Faso has progressively distanced itself from France, a trend that intensified following the withdrawal of French military forces from Burkinabè territory.

Concurrently, Ouagadougou has sought closer partnerships with alternative allies, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran, to bolster cooperation in areas such as security, economic growth, and international diplomacy.

A Historic Break in Bilateral Relations

The closure of Burkina Faso’s embassy in Paris marks an extraordinary milestone in recent diplomatic history between the two nations. It highlights the sweeping adjustments in Burkina Faso’s global alliances and signals a new phase in its relationship with France, one that will likely draw significant international attention.
