Burkina Faso has declared two European Union diplomats as persona non grata, giving them 72 hours to leave the country. The decision reflects the growing strain in relations between Ouagadougou and Brussels.

Two officials from the European Union’s delegation in Burkina Faso have been ordered to depart the country within three days. The move was confirmed by local authorities in Ouagadougou. The affected diplomats hold key positions: one serves as Deputy Head of Delegation and head of the Political, Press, and Information Section, while the other is the Programme Officer for the EU Delegation in Burkina Faso.

The expulsion follows a series of diplomatic confrontations between Burkina Faso and the European Union. Tensions escalated after the European Parliament adopted a resolution on June 18, 2026, condemning what it described as persistent repression of civic space and fundamental freedoms in Burkina Faso. The resolution drew sharp criticism from Burkinabe authorities, prompting Ouagadougou to summon the EU’s ambassador to Burkina Faso, Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, on June 22 for a formal reprimand.
