Burkina Faso formally severs diplomatic ties with the French Republic

The government of Burkina Faso has officially ended its diplomatic relationship with France, as confirmed in a statement issued on Friday, June 26, 2026.

The administration in Burkina Faso has announced to both national and international observers its decision to terminate diplomatic ties with the French Republic, effective immediately. This conclusion was reached after an extensive review of the bilateral state of affairs. Officials stated that the fundamental requirements for maintaining a partnership—specifically mutual trust, shared respect, and the upholding of national sovereignty and non-interference—are no longer present.

In justifying this significant shift in Faso current affairs, the government presented a series of grievances against the current French leadership. The authorities pointed to persistent actions by the French government that run contrary to the interests of Burkina Faso.

The official declaration highlighted concerns regarding neocolonial ambitions and alleged support for subversive networks and armed groups that have brought violence to the country and the wider Sahel. Furthermore, the government criticized what it described as biased and deceptive narratives intended to isolate the nation within the global community. Faced with these perceived imperialist pressures, Burkina Faso has chosen to prioritize its own sovereignty and responsibility.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE TERMINATION OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN BURKINA FASO AND THE FRENCH REPUBLIC

The Burkina Faso government informs the public that it has decided to sever diplomatic relations with France as of this day, June 26, 2026.

This move follows a thorough assessment of the current bilateral climate. The essential conditions for a relationship built on mutual respect and sovereignty have vanished. This is evidenced by the continuous efforts of the French regime to work against Burkinabè interests, including the support of destabilizing elements in the Sahel and the promotion of partial views to marginalize our nation.

We have chosen the path of independence over submission. However, the government wishes to clarify that this decision does not affect the deep-rooted historical, social, and cultural bonds between the people of Burkina Faso and France. The rupture is strictly confined to the institutional and diplomatic framework between the two states.

The government guarantees the safety and protection of all foreign nationals, including the French, and reaffirms its commitment to hospitality. Citizens are called upon to act with civility and restraint toward all expatriates living on our soil, in accordance with national laws.

Our nation remains determined to follow an independent foreign policy, focusing on the diversification of our international partners and the strengthening of South-South cooperation to ensure peace and sustainable development. Burkina Faso remains open to dialogue with any nation that respects our equality and legitimate interests.
