Cameroon trains 35 inspectors to elevate cocoa export standards

The National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC), in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has successfully concluded a specialized training program for 35 export warehouse inspectors in Douala.

This initiative, which took place from June 24 to 26, 2026, focused on equipping participants with advanced skills in sampling techniques, rigorous quality control, and the efficient management of storage facilities specifically for cocoa destined for international markets. Didime Olivier Tchoumi, the lead technical advisor at UNIDO, emphasized that the primary goal is to bolster the global competitiveness of Cameroonian cocoa and coffee. This effort is part of the PICS-Cameroon project, supported by funding from Japan.

The timing of this training is particularly significant following Cameroon’s recent international triumph. In February 2026, the nation secured a prestigious gold medal at the 10th Cacao of Excellence Awards during the Chocoa Trade Fair. Competing against nearly 191 samples from 45 different origins, Cameroon’s entry—identified as sample n°167—was crowned the best in the Africa & Indian Ocean category by a panel of global sensory and industrial experts.

This gold medal marks a significant improvement from the bronze recognition received in 2023, signaling a steady rise in the quality and reputation of Cameroonian beans. By targeting the “fine and flavour” premium segments, where authenticity and sustainability drive higher prices than traditional commodity markets, Cameroon is positioning itself as a top-tier producer of exceptional cocoa.

Beyond the accolades, this focus on excellence is designed to attract further investment into technical training, traceability, and the organization of local cooperatives. Such structural improvements are vital for converting high-quality production into lasting economic advantages for farmers across Cameroon, ensuring the sector meets the growing demands of high-end international chocolatiers.
