Chad strengthens ties with major tech firms in Washington

Chad is advancing its digital transformation agenda through high-level engagements in the United States. A government delegation led by Minister of Telecommunications, Digital Economy, and Digitalization Haliki Choua Mahamat traveled to Washington from May 23 to 31, 2026, to forge partnerships with American tech giants and government officials.

This strategic mission reflects N’Djamena’s commitment to accelerate the country’s digital infrastructure development and attract foreign investment in key sectors such as connectivity, data centers, cybersecurity, and digital health.

Key meetings and partnerships forged

The delegation engaged with senior officials from the US Department of State and Department of Commerce, exploring opportunities for collaboration in digital infrastructure, skills transfer, and technology deployment.

The delegation met with executives from several leading tech companies, including:

  • InterSystems – specializing in data management and health information systems
  • Starlink – addressing satellite internet connectivity challenges
  • Cybastion – focusing on cybersecurity solutions
  • Vertiv – providing data center and critical infrastructure technologies
  • 19Labs – developing AI and digital solutions

Digital connectivity: a national priority

One of the mission’s critical discussions centered on internet connectivity with Starlink. Chadian authorities highlighted concerns over service quality and pricing, noting that costs in Chad are less competitive compared to other African nations. Improving internet access remains a strategic priority, as traditional telecom infrastructure struggles to meet the growing demands of public administrations, businesses, and citizens.

Digital health transformation

Beyond telecommunications, Chad is prioritizing the digitalization of its healthcare system. Discussions with American partners focused on modernizing medical facilities, including the country’s five university teaching hospitals, 23 regional hospitals, and over 1,000 health centers. The goal is to enhance patient care, streamline medical data management, and improve healthcare service efficiency through digital tools.

Building local digital expertise

The Washington mission also addressed capacity building and technology transfer. Chadian authorities aim to strengthen local skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital professions to reduce dependence on foreign expertise and foster a more robust national tech ecosystem.

From dialogue to tangible results

For Chad, this diplomatic and economic outreach signals a broader strategy to position digital technology as a catalyst for economic diversification and modernization. While the country faces significant challenges in connectivity and digital inclusion, authorities are determined to translate these discussions into concrete projects that enhance infrastructure, public services, and competitiveness in Africa’s digital economy.
