French football league match halted by pitch invasion in Nantes
Frustrated supporters stormed the pitch mid-game as FC Nantes faced Toulouse in the final league fixtures.
The Ligue 1 clash between FC Nantes and Toulouse on Sunday afternoon was brought to an abrupt halt when dozens of disgruntled Nantes supporters stormed the pitch at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
The match, deadlocked at 0-0 after just 20 minutes in the final round of fixtures, was abandoned moments after the invasion occurred. The invading fans, dressed predominantly in black and wearing club colors, broke through security barriers in the Loire Stand and ignited smoke flares on the pitch.
With players from both sides forced to retreat to the dressing rooms, the incident escalated when Nantes head coach Vahid Halilhodzic attempted to confront the supporters before being restrained by his own staff. The veteran coach’s frustration was clearly audible as he addressed the media shortly after in the locker room.
Current status and next steps
While most of the pitch invaders returned to the stands, the match remains suspended. Broadcasters covering the fixture confirmed that a crisis meeting has been convened involving representatives from the French Football League and local authorities to determine the appropriate course of action.
