Nantes vs Toulouse match abandoned after fan disturbances in Ligue 1
The final game of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season between Nantes and Toulouse at the Stade de la Beaujoire was abandoned just 22 minutes in following serious fan disturbances. The match, which was already emotionally charged as Nantes’ last game before relegation to Ligue 2, saw supporters launch smoke bombs onto the pitch and invade the playing field.
Smoke bombs and pitch invasion force early abandonment
Discontent among Nantes fans was evident from the start, with protest banners displayed in the Loire Tribune stand. The situation escalated rapidly when smoke bombs were thrown onto the pitch, followed by a section of supporters breaking through security barriers to enter the field. The over 100 riot police officers deployed for the occasion were initially positioned on the opposite side of the stadium, leaving the situation unchecked for several critical minutes.
Halilhodzic faces down disorder amid emotional final match
Vahid Halilhodzic, 74, was coaching what would be his final match before retirement. Despite the chaos unfolding, he remained on the pitch longer than players and officials, confronting the invading fans before being restrained by stewards. Earlier in the match, he had been the sole recipient of support from the Loire Brigade ultras, who had paid emotional tribute to him before the disturbances began.
Players from both teams were reportedly seen urging their families to leave the stadium immediately. After approximately 10 minutes of escalating violence, riot police attempted to enter the Loire Tribune stand but were repelled by masked leaders of the fan group in violent clashes. Seats were ripped from the stands and thrown at police lines as the rest of the crowd watched in stunned silence.
Coach’s desperate plea to fans
Halilhodzic returned to the touchline after the disturbances had been ongoing for about 10 minutes. He expressed his intention to speak with the fans, only to be warned: “It’s too dangerous, they’re fighting each other.” He responded with visible frustration: “What are they going to do?”
Uncertain outcome for the abandoned match
With a crisis cell now reportedly formed involving Ligue 1 officials and public authorities, the future of the match hangs in the balance. Early indications suggest the game may be abandoned entirely, with no resumption expected as of 21:45 local time.
The disturbances marked a tragic end to what should have been a celebratory farewell for Halilhodzic, who had earlier been visibly moved to tears during the tribute from the Loire Brigade.
