Gabon-EU strategic dialogue advances reforms, investments, and climate goals

Yesterday, Gabon and the European Union held the second session of their strategic partnership dialogue at the Palais des Congrès Omar Bongo Ondimba in the Cité de la Démocratie. Co-chaired by Vice-President Hermann Immongault and EU Ambassador to Gabon Cécile Abadie, the meeting built on the first dialogue held in October 2024.

Hermann Immongault recalled that this dialogue is part of the Samoa Agreement, the legal foundation for relations between the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) nations. He stressed that the agreement calls for a more balanced, operational partnership oriented toward tangible results from public policies and investments.

During the working session, the two sides discussed four main themes: political reforms and governance, economic outlook, environmental sustainability and natural resource management, as well as multilateral and regional cooperation.

At the conclusion, both partners welcomed the institutional reforms undertaken during Gabon’s transition and exchanged views on human rights and fundamental freedoms. “No subject was taboo,” Immongault stated, adding that the discussions helped clarify all grey areas.

Talks also covered Gabon’s economic prospects, ongoing structural reforms, improving the business climate, and measures to attract more investments. The European Global Gateway strategy was also mentioned.

Environmental issues also took centre stage. Both sides reaffirmed their shared vision on sustainable forest management and explored cooperation opportunities in sustainable fisheries, energy, and waste management.

Finally, Gabon and the EU reiterated their commitment to multilateralism and noted broad alignment on regional and international matters, particularly maritime security and regional integration.

Moving forward, both parties aim to deepen ties and continue consultations on jointly identified priorities, in an atmosphere described as open and trusting.
