The Gabonese government has taken decisive action to safeguard its domestic seafood supply. Since March 26, 2026, the export of sardines (Ethmalosa fimbriata) and the locally known “sans nom” fish (Heterotis niloticus) has been temporarily banned across the country. This measure, formalized through two ministerial decrees issued by the Ministry of Sea, Fisheries, and Blue Economy and published in the Official Gazette on April 16, 2026, addresses a growing shortage in Gabonese markets. While these fish species continue to supply neighboring countries, particularly in border regions like Cocobeach, authorities now prioritize local consumption to curb uncontrolled resource depletion.
