The “Operation Tomber la barbe” marks the end of a unique political challenge by the veteran reporter.
After eight months of maintaining a thick beard and untrimmed hair as a form of political protest, journalist Souley Onohiolo is ready to visit the barber. The event, dubbed “Operation Tomber la barbe” (Drop the Beard), is scheduled for Friday, July 3, 2026.
This personal challenge began following the re-election of President Paul Biya on October 12, 2026. Onohiolo had publicly vowed not to shave until a new government was formed to replace the cabinet that has been in office since 2019. However, with no sign of a reshuffle on the horizon, the journalist has decided to end his capillary strike.
A symbolic ceremony in Yaoundé
The organizing committee has announced that the official ceremony will take place at 12:00 PM at the BOTANIK’S beauty center, located in the Essos district of Yaoundé. The event is expected to draw a significant crowd from the media landscape to witness the transformation of the esteemed editorialist and grand reporter.
The proceedings are being held under the supervision of Dieudonné Mveng Balla, the promoter of Info TV. Organizers describe the act as more than just a haircut, calling it a “singular and unprecedented event” that highlights a period of silent revolt and republican struggle.

Ending the “capillary commitment”
While the anticipated government changes have not occurred, Souley Onohiolo is choosing to move forward. The committee emphasizes that his eight-month journey served as a symbol of resistance and a mark of civic engagement aimed at impacting society.
The upcoming gathering on July 3 will serve as the final chapter of this “singular epic,” conducted in the presence of colleagues and observers who have followed his journey of protest from both near and far.
