Heavy casualties reported in Mali’s battle for Anéfis
The struggle for dominance in northern Mali has escalated into one of the deadliest confrontations in recent months. In a televised address on state-run television, Mali’s Chief of Staff, General Jean Élysée Dao, revealed a devastating toll following intense fighting in the strategic town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal.
A grim human cost
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) sustained significant losses, with General Dao confirming the deaths of nearly thirty soldiers—honored as “martyrs”—alongside over sixty wounded, many in critical condition. On the opposing side, military authorities assert that enemy forces, including separatist factions like the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists (JNIM), suffered heavy casualties. While the rebel coalition acknowledged the loss of “some of its finest fighters,” they refrained from providing an official death toll.
Anéfis: the critical battleground
Anéfis holds immense strategic value in the conflict. For the Malian military—backed by Russian reinforcements—securing this area is crucial to disrupting militant supply routes and safeguarding the supply corridor leading to Kidal. Military sources describe the clashes as exceptionally brutal, with a Malian-Russian detachment temporarily trapped in a military outpost under relentless attack. Reinforcements, including heavy weaponry and air support dispatched from Gao, eventually enabled government forces to regain control. Rebel groups, however, claim their actions were a “tactical withdrawal” to prevent civilian harm.
A test for Bamako’s transitional leadership
The grim outcome of these clashes underscores the persistent challenges facing Mali’s transitional government in Bamako. Since seizing power in 2020, the military leadership has pledged to restore security and territorial integrity nationwide. Yet the ferocity of combat in Anéfis exposes the resilience of armed groups in the North, prolonging a grueling war of attrition that continues to exact a heavy human toll.
