New military training hub in tan-tan to boost us-Morocco defense ties

Morocco and the United States are advancing plans to establish a cutting-edge military training center in Tan-Tan, set to redefine regional defense collaboration. The Advanced Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) will integrate three core facilities: a Multidomain Training Area (MDTA), a Drone Academy (MTDA), and an Innovation and Experimentation Hub. This strategic initiative aims to modernize military capabilities by embedding advanced technologies and fostering seamless interoperability between African and Western defense partners, as outlined in official communications.

General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR), emphasized the country’s readiness to turn this vision into operational reality swiftly. “Morocco’s existing infrastructure and highly skilled workforce provide the perfect foundation to accelerate the transition from concept to action,” he stated. The Kingdom’s reputation as a dependable industrial partner for the U.S. further strengthens its position in this ambitious project.

three specialized facilities to shape future defense operations

The MDTA will serve as a high-tech training ground for forces preparing to operate in complex, multi-domain environments. This includes full-spectrum electromagnetic warfare scenarios, ensuring troops gain critical skills for modern combat. Meanwhile, the MTDA will focus on equipping African operators with expertise in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations across West Africa.

The Innovation Hub, the third pillar, will act as a fast-track laboratory for emerging technologies. It will evaluate breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and next-generation communications. A key priority will be developing cost-effective, scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s unique operational challenges.

beyond military training: economic and technological ripple effects

The AMTEC project is not just about defense—it’s a catalyst for broader economic and technological growth. By involving industry leaders and academic institutions, it aims to cultivate a thriving innovation ecosystem centered on defense technologies. The center could also test future wireless and detection technologies while supporting development in remote regions.

General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of U.S. AFRICOM, described the initiative as “a game-changer for both American and African defense industries, as well as academic institutions, to pioneer solutions for emerging security threats.

african lion 2027: a proving ground for amtec

The first real-world test of AMTEC’s capabilities will unfold during African Lion 2027. This annual military exercise in Morocco has long served as a testing ground for integrating advanced technologies under real-world conditions, making it the ideal platform to validate the center’s future role.
