Ousmane Sonko took a firm stand on the upcoming local elections during his investiture ceremony at the Dakar Arena this Sunday, voicing strong opposition to any potential delays.
Addressing a massive gathering of PASTEF supporters and high-ranking officials, the party leader made it clear that his political movement would not endorse any attempt to postpone the vote. “PASTEF will not agree to a delay of the local elections. We are ready,” he declared, a statement that drew loud applause from the crowd.
Continuing his address, Sonko highlighted that any postponement would have to respect the legal and institutional framework of the country. He noted that an election delay in Sénégal is not possible without a formal process through the National Assembly. He urged the responsible authorities to begin the necessary preparations to ensure the vote takes place as scheduled.
The PASTEF leader also responded to rumors circulating about the electoral timeline. “Let the President sign the decree; delays will not save anyone,” he stated, emphasizing the need for swift action from the executive branch.
