More than two years after stepping down from power, former Senegalese President Macky Sall will return to Dakar on July 17 for a high-level meeting with his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The encounter, confirmed in a social media post by Sall, is part of his ongoing consultations ahead of his candidacy for the United Nations Secretary-General position.
In his announcement, Macky Sall expressed gratitude to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for the scheduled meeting and acknowledged the unwavering support from Senegalese citizens since his candidacy was announced. His upcoming visit to Dakar has sparked lively debate, particularly within the Pastef movement led by Ousmane Sonko.
Critics argue that welcoming the former president could be interpreted as an endorsement of the pre-election unrest and alleged mismanagement of national resources during his tenure. Meanwhile, Macky Sall has remained actively engaged on the global stage, meeting with world leaders in recent months to strengthen his bid for the top UN role.
It is worth noting that Senegal has not formally endorsed his candidacy, which has instead been supported by Burundi. Macky Sall served as Senegal’s President from 2012 to 2024 before relocating to Marrakech, where he has continued his diplomatic outreach.
