For the upcoming CAN U17 2025, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced the list of referees chosen for the preparatory stage ahead of the tournament scheduled in Morocco from 13 May to 2 June. Among the selected officials, Senegal proudly features a single representative: El Hadj Amadou Sy.
a rising star in african refereeing
Following this preparatory stage, the CAF will finalize the list of referees who will officiate during the U17 Africa Cup of Nations. El Hadj Amadou Sy, a FIFA-listed international referee since 2019, continues to solidify his reputation in the field. Born in Saint-Louis, he began his refereeing journey through local competitions like the « navétanes », initially in youth categories, before steadily climbing the ranks in senior competitions and establishing himself in Senegal’s professional league.
experience and continental representation
With extensive experience in major continental tournaments, El Hadj Amadou Sy has officiated at the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations and the most recent U17 edition, where he was among the selected officials. Historically, Senegal has often had multiple referees or a trio representing the country in African competitions. This time, however, El Hadj Amadou Sy stands alone, carrying the nation’s hopes of making the final list and representing Senegal at the tournament—where the Senegalese U17 team will also compete.
countries with the highest representation
The CAF’s preparatory stage sees several nations with strong representation, including:
- Algeria, Cameroon, DR Congo, Morocco, Zambia, and South Africa, each contributing three referees;
- Tunisia, Mali, Nigeria, and Egypt, each with two referees on the list.
