Senegal’s Bassirou Diomaye Faye meets former president Macky Sall in Dakar

After relocating to Morocco following his departure from office in March 2024, former Senegalese President Macky Sall will return to Dakar on July 17 for a scheduled meeting with current Head of State Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This visit is part of his ongoing campaign efforts for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

In a public statement, Sall expressed his appreciation for the invitation, stating, “As part of my consultations and visits related to my candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position, I will travel to Senegal on Friday, July 17, 2026. I extend my sincere gratitude to His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for this opportunity to meet. I also deeply appreciate the unwavering support and encouragement from the Senegalese people since announcing my candidacy.”

The announcement of Sall’s return has already sparked debates across Senegal’s political landscape, particularly within the ranks of Pastef, the party led by Ousmane Sonko. Critics argue that welcoming Sall could legitimize concerns over pre-election unrest and allegations of economic mismanagement during his presidency. Notably, Sall’s UN candidacy was not officially endorsed by Senegal but by Burundi.

Sall’s political trajectory in Senegal

Macky Sall served as President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024, succeeding his political mentor, Abdoulaye Wade. Prior to this role, he held the position of President of the National Assembly. Earlier in his career, Sall was Prime Minister from 2004 to 2007, succeeding Idrissa Seck.

His ministerial experience includes serving as Minister of Mines, Energy, and Hydraulics from May 2001 to November 2002, before being promoted to Minister of State for the same portfolio until August 2003. From August 2003 to April 2004, he held the dual role of Minister of State for Interior and Local Communities while also serving as government spokesperson. Additionally, Sall previously led PETROSEN as its Managing Director.

International engagements post-presidency

Since leaving office, Sall has maintained an active international profile, participating in high-level summits and diplomatic meetings with global leaders. His recent travels reflect a continued commitment to global affairs, particularly in the context of his UN candidacy.
