Senegal’s political landscape shifts as Bassirou Diomaye Faye establishes KIIRAAY

On Saturday, July 25, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal inaugurated his latest political initiative, KIIRAAY – Les Patriotes Républicains, in Dakar. This move signals a fresh chapter in the nation’s political restructuring following his separation from the PASTEF party, formerly led by his mentor, Ousmane Sonko.

The party’s launch took place during its founding general assembly, held at a prominent hotel in the capital. The new formation adopts the motto « La Patrie d’abord » (« The Nation First »), emphasizing a commitment to national interest, institutional strengthening, and the reinforcement of the rule of law.

The name KIIRAAY, derived from Wolof, translates to « what protects, » reflecting the party’s stated mission to support the governance vision of the President and unite those aligned with his agenda for Senegal’s transformation.

During the assembly, delegates unanimously elected Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the party’s president. This decision follows his earlier departure from the leadership roles within PASTEF at the start of his presidential term.

The establishment of KIIRAAY stems from the merger of 437 political parties, movements, and associations, all rallying behind a shared objective: backing the reforms initiated by the President and advancing the country’s development ambitions. Aminata Touré, the former general supervisor of the « Diomaye Président » coalition, presented the resolution outlining this strategic union.

The creation of this new political entity is being closely monitored by international partners, investors, and development stakeholders. As Senegal advances its Vision Sénégal 2050 strategy, institutional stability and transparent governance remain pivotal in fostering market confidence, attracting investments, and solidifying international collaborations.
