Senegal’s political transparency debate: Babacar Bâ challenges Ousmane Sonko on 1.7 billion CFA fund

In a fresh public statement, Babacar Bâ, President of the Forum du Justiciable (FJ), has called out a stark contradiction in the transparency narrative of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. As a prominent advocate for good governance and accountability, Bâ points to Sonko’s own handling of a 1.7 billion CFA political fund during his tenure as head of government—a figure the opposition leader had previously criticized under the label of ‘black coffers.’

Bâ’s critique underscores the irony of Sonko’s transformation from a vocal opponent of opaque financial practices to a figure now defending the very mechanisms he once condemned. The FJ leader has made political fund transparency a central issue in recent months, repeatedly urging the Presidency, Prime Minister’s office, and National Assembly to disclose financial records and submit to audits by the Court of Auditors.

The President of the FJ characterizes Senegal’s governance as a facade of institutional integrity, far removed from the transparency standards demanded by civil society. In an unusually direct appeal, he urges Senegalese citizens to reclaim agency over their nation’s future, framing the call in terms that resonate beyond the technical debates over public finance.
