In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has taken a decisive step by officially launching his own political party, marking a clear break from his former ally and former ruling party leader, Ousmane Sonko.

Once a key figure within the Pastef party, led by Sonko, Faye has now established the Patriotes Républicains (Republican Patriots), formalizing a long-anticipated split that has been brewing for months.

This political maneuver unfolds against a backdrop of severe economic strain, with national debt reaching critical levels and urgent discussions underway with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance.

In the weeks leading up to this announcement, a growing number of Pastef officials defected to Faye’s new movement, including regional leaders and youth section members. Notably, several figures from the opposition Alliance pour la République also joined the fold, signaling a shift in the political landscape.

Faye and Sonko rose to power together in 2024 under the Pastef banner, which stands for Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity). Their alliance, forged ahead of the 2024 presidential election, has now collapsed due to deep disagreements over critical policy decisions, particularly regarding negotiations with the IMF.

The formation of Faye’s new party sets the stage for a high-stakes political showdown between the former allies. With local elections slated for 2027 and the presidential race approaching in 2029, this division could reshape Senegal’s political future and influence the trajectory of its economic recovery efforts.
