Sonko clarifies stance on religious references in political discourse

During a gathering in Khombole to launch membership card sales for his party, Pastef, Ousmane Sonko addressed a statement made by former minister Maimouna Dièye that included an excessive religious reference tied to his name.

Dièye had publicly honored Sonko using a phrase reserved for divine figures, stating: « I am honored to speak in the presence of Seydina Ousmane Sonko Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam. » The Pastef leader swiftly intervened, emphasizing that such expressions should never be associated with his person.

« While the affection from the public is deeply meaningful, it must not lead to inappropriate reverence, » Sonko clarified. « My sister Maimouna Dièye, when addressing the crowd earlier, combined my name with religious praise. Ma téyé sama Guémign, » he stated firmly before the assembled supporters.

The incident highlights Sonko’s ongoing efforts to maintain a clear boundary between political leadership and religious veneration. He underlined that the phrase « Salalahou Aleyhi Wa Salam » is exclusively reserved for the Prophet Mohammed, adding: « Let us reserve this reverence for the Prophet. I have never reached that level, nor will I. » His remarks were met with strong applause from the militants.

This clarification follows Sonko’s nationwide tour to promote Pastef’s membership drive, with upcoming stops in Bargny, Bambey, and Sébikhotane. The leader continues to prioritize direct engagement with citizens as part of his political mobilization strategy.
