DAKAR — A defining moment in Senegal’s political landscape unfolded this past Saturday, July 25, 2026. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye took a decisive step by formally severing ties with his former Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, and unveiling his own political movement: Kiiraay — which translates to “shield” in Wolof.
Addressing a jubilant crowd of supporters during the inaugural gathering, Faye declared, « Kiiraay is the majority party in this nation. »
The newly formed party adopts the slogan « Patriotes républicains » (Republican Patriots) and is built on five core principles: the Republic, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligence.
Reflecting on the journey that led to this moment and the political tensions that preceded it, the Head of State used a vivid agricultural metaphor to convey his renewed commitment: « Public life has its sowing seasons, its harvests, and yes, even its seasons of disappointment (…) Now, I stand in the fields. Dear Republican Patriots, today we plant a new seed in Senegalese soil. »
A defining congress is scheduled once the summer rains subside. This foundational event will shape the strategic direction of Kiiraay and finalize its leadership structure, marking a pivotal shift in Senegal’s political climate.
