French football authorities have launched an investigation into potential match-fixing after suspicious betting patterns emerged surrounding a yellow card issued to Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi during a recent Ligue 1 fixture.
Unusual betting activity detected
The investigation centers on a match between OGC Nice and FC Metz on May 17, where Wahi, then playing for Nice, received a yellow card in the 36th minute for a studs-up challenge on Metz defender Salidou Sané. Analysts monitoring betting markets had flagged the incident as potentially suspicious due to an unusual spike in wagers placed on Wahi receiving a card.
Following these alerts, the French Football League (LFP) filed a formal complaint on May 29 against unidentified parties, citing potential violations of sports corruption and organized fraud statutes. The case has since been transferred to the Marseille public prosecutor’s office, which confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player on May 29 in connection with the investigation.
The player, who remains at liberty after questioning, is currently participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the Ivory Coast national team. Authorities have stressed that inquiries are ongoing and additional developments are expected.
Key match incident under scrutiny
Wahi’s yellow card occurred just four minutes after he had escaped punishment for a dangerous tackle from behind on Bouna Sarr in the 32nd minute. The controversial decision resulted in Wahi serving a suspension that would impact Nice’s playoff match against Saint-Étienne, a game that proved crucial in securing the club’s top-flight status.
In response to the allegations, the LFP reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of French football competitions. “We will take decisive action against any actions that threaten the fairness of our leagues,” the governing body stated in an official release.

World Cup star at the center of allegations
Wahi’s involvement in the incident takes on added significance as he currently represents the Ivory Coast in the ongoing 2026 World Cup tournament. The 23-year-old forward’s performance in France’s top division had already drawn attention before this controversy, with his club Nice benefiting from his suspension-avoidance in the relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne.
