Tchad secures major urban development opportunities at Baku forum

Tchad’s delegation highlights breakthroughs in sustainable urban planning at Baku forum

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development and Housing recently presented the outcomes of a high-level mission to Baku, Azerbaijan, where the country participated in the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13). The closed-door briefing, held at the ministry’s headquarters, brought together key stakeholders including the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, senior officials from the National Housing and Construction Company (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat.

The Tchadien delegation engaged in intensive discussions centered on critical urban challenges, including affordable housing shortages, sustainable city growth, and climate-resilient urban infrastructure. The forum provided a strategic platform for Tchad to amplify its voice in pan-African urban development dialogues and showcase its national initiatives through a dedicated exhibition stand.

Major breakthroughs secured on the international stage

One of the most significant outcomes was the confirmation of an upcoming official visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. This high-profile visit will focus on assessing the country’s urban landscape and reviewing a series of priority projects submitted by national authorities.

Additionally, Tchad has been officially included in the top ten eligible countries for the UN Green Climate Fund, a milestone achieved with strategic support from Kenya. This inclusion unlocks access to substantial financing for urban resilience projects, particularly in flood-prone areas where rapid urbanization has intensified vulnerabilities.

New partnerships forged to accelerate urban transformation

Parallel negotiations with Kenya and Morocco resulted in agreements to deepen collaboration in housing policy, social housing development, and informal settlement upgrading. These partnerships will facilitate knowledge exchange, joint technical missions, and coordinated investment in sustainable urban infrastructure.

The Minister emphasized that these outcomes represent tangible progress toward fulfilling the national vision for inclusive, sustainable, and climate-adaptive urban development—a core pillar of the government’s long-term strategy under the leadership of the President of the Republic and Head of State, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

The Tchadien delegation’s participation at WUF13 underscores the country’s proactive stance in addressing urbanization challenges while leveraging international partnerships to build resilient, future-ready cities for all citizens.
