The UDC demands justice following reports of activist Jacques Bertrand Mang’s mistreatment
The Union Démocratique du Cameroun (UDC) has expressed profound alarm over the alleged torture and inhuman treatment of political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang. Through its president, Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, the party has issued a stern condemnation of these practices, which are strictly forbidden by the national Constitution. The political formation warned that if these reports are confirmed, they would represent a catastrophic breach of fundamental rights and the principles governing a state of law.
In a formal statement, the UDC reiterated that no form of civic activism or personal dispute can ever serve as a justification for the use of torture, violence, or any cruel and degrading treatment. Consequently, the party is urging the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this case. The goal is to ensure the physical and moral safety of Jacques Bertrand Mang while guaranteeing that his legal protections are fully upheld.
Jacques Bertrand Mang is a prominent figure known for his vocal stance against social inequalities, the daily struggles of the Cameroonian people, and failures in governance. The activist was reportedly subjected to violence and mistreatment within a police station in Douala on June 30, 2026. During a live broadcast on his Facebook page, Mang was seen requesting his release from the officers on duty. However, he was told he could not leave while in an agitated state and was physically prevented from exiting the premises, despite multiple attempts, until a superior officer arrived.
This recent event is part of a broader pattern of pressure against the activist. Previously, Jacques Bertrand Mang has been detained and forcibly admitted to a medical facility for involuntary psychiatric treatment. His outspoken nature has also led to several legal complaints filed with judicial authorities. Through his social media videos, he frequently critiques the actions of the police, gendarmerie, customs, and municipal law enforcement, as well as government officials and various public figures. According to recent information, he is currently being held in custody.
