Why supporting Paul Biya is crucial during the vice-president appointment process

The political landscape shifted significantly on June 29, 2026, when the Minister of Finance addressed the rehabilitation of Sonara.

This intervention occurred as the minister returned to the forefront of the succession debate, following a series of media campaigns aimed at discrediting Franck Biya. Questions have arisen regarding why such targeted attacks have surfaced against the President’s son at this critical juncture.

Reports had previously suggested that Bulu elites and southern youth were opposed to a potential candidacy from Franck Biya. However, the reality appears to be that his growing influence is causing concern among other contenders for the vice-presidency. Before his departure for Switzerland, the Head of State was presented with two distinct proposals for the vice-presidency and a new government—one from the First Lady’s entourage and another from the Presidency’s Secretariat. Paul Biya chose not to act on either, instead opting to bypass standard travel protocols for his Swiss trip, where he reportedly held working sessions with Franck Biya.

The controversy surrounding gold and corporate allegations

Recent accusations have surfaced attempting to link Franck Biya to gold trafficking scandals. This development is a clear indicator that a final confrontation is underway within the upper echelons of power. The ongoing revelations concerning the Martinez Zogo case and the gold looting scandals currently under review by the Special Criminal Tribunal (TCS) are being closely monitored by the President. These mechanisms are likely to lead to the political downfall of several high-ranking figures who have displayed a fierce appetite for power.

The prolonged wait for the designation of a vice-president and a cabinet reshuffle has increased risks to national security. Following the Martinez Zogo affair, which exposed links between certain security services and business interests, the President has increasingly relied on the BIR (Rapid Intervention Battalion). This elite unit is now central to the defense of national sovereignty, with its leadership taking a more prominent role within the Etoudi palace.

International intelligence agencies are also closely watching the situation. Following security advice, Paul Biya has been encouraged to limit his movements to prevent destabilization in the absence of a clear succession plan. High-level security meetings have taken place in Yaoundé, including visits from top United States intelligence officials. These events demonstrate that Paul Biya maintains full control over the nation’s strategic files. In the face of intense clan rivalries, the President’s safety remains the primary guarantee for a peaceful transition of power in Cameroon.
