The young athletes from Burkina Faso delivered impressive performances at the recent U18 and U20 Athletics Championships held in Ouagadougou. With a total of 67 medals, the country took top spot ahead of Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo.
Zalissa Zongo was one of the standout athletes, winning nearly six gold medals, including a national record in the triple jump. She expressed her excitement over beating her personal best time of 13.12 seconds, but hopes to reach 14.01 seconds soon.
The U18 team showed great potential, with over 10 national records broken and exceptional athletes like Zalissa Zongo shining bright. Allan also made a notable appearance, improving his record by 4cm with a time of 16.09.
The U20 team continued the momentum, adding 28 more medals to their tally, including 10 gold, 13 silver, and 5 bronze. The boys’ team secured 16 medals, while the girls took 12, solidifying Burkina Faso’s lead in the overall standings.
The victory is a testament to the promising young athletes of Burkina Faso, who are making waves in regional and African competitions. With performances in various events, including sprints, jumps, throws, and relays, they’re giving hope for future success at the Youth Olympics and World Junior Championships.
