Deadly Boko Haram attack on Niger military post near N’Guigmi

A violent assault by Boko Haram militants on Friday claimed the lives of nearly a dozen soldiers stationed near the southeastern Niger town of N’Guigmi.

N’Guigmi serves as a key garrison town in the Diffa region, bordering the vast Lake Chad basin—a sprawling wetland shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.

Since 2009, this area has become a hotspot for jihadist activity, hosting both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) cells.

“About a dozen soldiers were killed in the attack carried out by Boko Haram insurgents early Friday morning near N’Guigmi,” revealed a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The assailants also suffered casualties, and the army has launched sweeping clearance operations in response,” the resident added.

Locals took to social media to confirm the assault, reporting that “ten soldiers and four national guard members lost their lives”.

Niger’s official news agency (ANP) acknowledged the casualties without providing exact figures, stating that the victims “perished following an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”
