The devastating Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has now claimed over 500 lives. This grim milestone was reached according to the most recent figures released by the Congolese Ministry of Health.
Health officials have documented a total of 1,561 verified infections to date, with 506 of these resulting in fatalities. Amidst the crisis, 253 individuals have successfully recovered, while 628 confirmed patients are currently receiving care, either in isolation facilities or hospitals.
The epidemic, initially declared on May 15, has tragically expanded its reach to 36 distinct health zones across the provinces of Ituri, Nord-Kivu, and Sud-Kivu. Persistent community transmission of the virus continues to fuel its spread in these regions.
Ituri province bears the brunt of the crisis, accounting for over 91% of all confirmed cases and nearly 84% of the deaths recorded since the onset of the outbreak, as reported by Congolese authorities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the rapid evolution and sustained proliferation of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. As of July 1, intensive health monitoring was underway for at least 10,821 individuals who had contact with confirmed cases in Ituri and Nord-Kivu, a critical measure in the ongoing efforts to curb the disease’s advancement.
