DRC eastern crisis: Congolese leader reaffirms backing for regional peace efforts in Angola

The Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi traveled to Luanda to meet with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, a key figure in regional diplomatic efforts addressing the escalating crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Their discussions unfolded ahead of a regional summit, following a series of preparatory meetings between both administrations.

The visit comes as Angola continues to lead consultations aimed at fostering an inclusive inter-Congolese dialogue. Earlier this year, envoys dispatched by President Tshisekedi visited Luanda to align on the framework and objectives of this critical negotiation process.

Angolan authorities have since engaged with multiple stakeholders within the DRC, compiling a comprehensive roadmap and reference framework to guide the dialogue. However, significant gaps persist between the government, opposition factions, and civil society—particularly religious institutions—delaying the formal launch of the talks.

Verifiable peace remains the ultimate goal

Speaking at the summit, President Tshisekedi framed the crisis in eastern DRC as a defining challenge for Africa and the international community. He highlighted the devastating impact of armed group violence, mass displacements, human rights abuses, foreign interference, and illegal exploitation of natural resources.

The Congolese leader reiterated strong support for both the Washington and Doha peace processes, emphasizing that sustainable peace must be tangible on the ground. Meanwhile, Angolan President João Lourenço underscored the urgency of negotiated solutions, adherence to international law, and diplomatic engagement, reaffirming Angola’s commitment to resolving African crises through homegrown solutions.

Despite the growing number of diplomatic initiatives—including those led by Washington, Doha, and Angola’s mediation efforts—the security situation in eastern DRC continues to deteriorate. None of the initiatives have yet translated into meaningful improvements on the ground.
