Gabon unveils its inaugural data center, charting a course for digital autonomy

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially launched Gabon’s first state-of-the-art data center yesterday within the Nkok Special Economic Zone. This pivotal infrastructure was brought to fruition by ST Digital Data Center Services, marking a significant stride in the nation’s digital evolution. The ceremonial event also featured the signing of a crucial memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation and ST Digital, designed to empower Gabonese startups.

This dual initiative is poised to significantly enhance the local hosting of critical data, bolster national cybersecurity measures, and accelerate Gabon’s overall digital transformation. Adhering to rigorous international benchmarks, as evidenced by its Tier III certification, this cutting-edge facility promises to elevate national data storage capabilities, facilitate advanced cloud computing services, and provide essential support to government administrations and private enterprises. Ultimately, it reinforces Gabon’s digital sovereignty. Through this strategic endeavor, the head of state unequivocally demonstrates his commitment to guiding Gabon towards a robust and self-reliant digital future.

The collaborative framework ensures that emerging businesses will gain privileged access to a suite of professional services. Selected startups are set to benefit from a dedicated virtual machine, 120 GB of high-speed SSD storage, 8 GB of random-access memory, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous preferential pricing.

The Ministry will play a crucial role in identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting the local hosting of digital assets, and spearheading awareness campaigns focused on cybersecurity best practices. Laïka Mba, the esteemed Director General of ST Digital, underscored the profound significance of this achievement, stating, ”The establishment of a national data center in Gabon represents far more than a technological triumph; it is a definitive act of sovereignty.” She further elaborated, ”It provides the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, essential public services, and the personal data of our citizens will no longer be dependent on foreign infrastructures.”

ST Digital will assume responsibility for ensuring the utmost security of hosted data and providing continuous technical assistance. This strategic public-private partnership is designed to foster the development of innovative digital solutions, conceptualized and hosted entirely within Gabon, thereby cultivating an environment highly conducive to innovation, job creation, and increased investment across the country.
