Legal action launched over sonko’s comments about touba

A legal dispute has intensified following public remarks made by Ousmane Sonko regarding the holy city of Touba. A representative from the Collective of the Grandchildren of Serigne Touba has formally submitted a complaint to the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Dakar High Court, urging an immediate judicial investigation.

The complaint, filed on July 14, 2026, by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang—a Senegalese citizen, entrepreneur, and grandson of the city’s founder—alleges that the statements attributed to the PASTEF leader constitute a serious affront to Touba’s reputation and the integrity of its residents.

In his filing, the complainant references a public address in which Sonko allegedly claimed that ‘dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba.’ Such remarks, the plaintiff argues, undermine the moral foundation of a city built on values of faith, integrity, justice, and diligence as espoused by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

The Collective’s petition demands that the Prosecutor promptly initiate an inquiry, summon Ousmane Sonko to clarify his statements, and provide supporting evidence. Additionally, the group seeks a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of the allegations. If substantiated, they request legal action under relevant provisions of Senegalese law, including charges of defamation, dissemination of false information, or other applicable offenses.

The complainant asserts possession of compelling evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the contested remarks, and media publications documenting the statements. This legal maneuver arrives amid escalating political tensions surrounding Sonko’s comments and could lead to further judicial proceedings if the prosecution proceeds with the case.
