In 2024, a trace amount of meldonium—a prohibited substance—was detected in a routine doping test on Mudryk. The Ukrainian winger received a four-year suspension as a result. He promptly appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has since updated its regulations. Under the new rules, an identical finding today would not have triggered disciplinary proceedings.

The Football Association (FA) explained in an official statement: “Regulatory changes have been implemented. Even though Mudryk’s case cannot be reassessed retroactively, the positive test would no longer lead to a suspension. The meldonium level detected in his sample would not have been flagged, meaning no anti-doping violation would have been recorded.”

Following this clarification and additional factors related to the case, the FA and Mudryk reached a mutual agreement, with WADA’s endorsement.

As part of this resolution, Mudryk admitted to breaching anti-doping regulations and accepted a completed suspension period. Consequently, his ban is now lifted, and he is free to resume competitive play immediately.
