Opposition coalition demanded to uphold electoral timelines

During a press briefing on July 23, Social Democratic Front (SDF) leader Joshua Osih urged the government to respect Cameroon’s electoral calendar without further delays. He called on all opposition parties, regardless of political leanings, to form a unified coalition to defend this fundamental right of Cameroonians.

“Elections must proceed on schedule—no more postponements. The electoral calendar belongs to the people, not the government. I urge the entire opposition to unite behind this demand,” Osih declared. So far, no opposition leader has publicly responded to his appeal.

This demand follows months of controversy after municipal and legislative elections were postponed. The government cited financial, logistical, and security constraints, as well as calendar adjustments, to justify the delays. The National Assembly approved the government’s bill, and President Paul Biya’s decree formalized the extension until February 2027.
