Ousmane Sonko’s shifting stance on constitutional council sparks debate

Ousmane Sonko’s recent statements about the Constitutional Council reveal a stark contrast in his rhetoric. Just days after urging respect for the Council’s decisions, he delivered a scathing critique during the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Touba, questioning the institution’s independence.
Ousmane Sonko’s position on the Constitutional Council has undergone a noticeable shift. Following the Council’s decision to strike down a parliamentary bill aimed at expanding legislative powers at the expense of the president, Sonko initially called for acceptance of the ruling. He emphasized the importance of institutional roles in maintaining democratic stability.
Yet during the Pastef headquarters inauguration in Touba, his tone shifted dramatically. Addressing supporters, Sonko condemned the Council’s ruling, arguing that it undermines legislative authority. “The Constitutional Council cannot dictate that lawmakers draft laws solely to please the president. This is deeply troubling for our nation,” he declared.
He also criticized the president’s frequent recourse to the Council, suggesting it reflects an overreach of executive influence. “Week after week, the head of state turns to the Constitutional Council,” Sonko remarked, alluding to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s recent legal maneuvers.
