Sonko clarifies constitutional revision process amid political rumors

Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has firmly denied allegations of issuing an ultimatum to the country’s President regarding the ongoing constitutional reform process. Speaking during a plenary session focused on labor and social security codes, he addressed growing political speculation with a decisive rebuttal.

The political figure, who presides over Senegal’s legislative body, emphasized that the constitutional revision process adheres strictly to constitutional provisions without any attempt to pressure the executive branch. « This is false; no ultimatum was ever directed at the President, » Sonko stated, dismissing claims of institutional tensions.

In his address to lawmakers, he underscored the importance of understanding the parliamentary role in constitutional amendments. According to Sonko, the initiative falls under the Parliament’s derived constituent power, governed by constitutional and legal frameworks. He cited a 2006 Constitutional Council ruling as validation that the Assembly can advance reforms with a qualified majority of three-fifths.

No institutional crisis, only structured dialogue

Sonko rejected interpretations suggesting conflict between state institutions, describing the process as normal legislative activity within a « dialogue among powers. » He reiterated that each constitutional body operates within its mandated boundaries, with the Constitutional Council ensuring compliance.

The Assembly President concluded by assuring that the reform process will proceed independently of the executive’s formal opinion. « Those waiting for a crisis at the highest level of government will look elsewhere, » he remarked, affirming the continuity of parliamentary procedures.

For Sonko, the key lies in upholding constitutional mechanisms, ensuring a stable and legally sound framework for the revision.
