Sonko’s pastef party loses key figure in podor

Podor’s political landscape shifts as Ibrahima Diam Sow leaves Pastef

Pastef party leader Ousmane Sonko

A major political realignment unfolds in Podor as Ibrahima Diam Sow, a founding member of Pastef, joins forces with the Diomaye-Président coalition. His departure signals deepening rifts within one of Senegal’s most influential opposition parties.

The political dynamics in Podor have shifted dramatically with the defection of Ibrahima Diam Sow, a key figure in Pastef’s northern operations. Once the party’s coordinator for Méri and leader of the Mouvement des Patriotes Soumis (MPI), Sow has publicly severed ties with Ousmane Sonko’s movement, citing fundamental disagreements with its current direction.

Sow, who formerly handled communications for Pastef in the Podor region, described his exit as a response to what he calls « persistent contradictions » within the party. He condemned what he perceives as an increasingly rigid internal environment, comparing it to a « dictatorship of conformity. » These developments, he argued, have made it impossible for him to align with Pastef’s evolving political vision.

In a decisive move, Sow has pledged his support to the Diomaye-Président coalition, emphasizing his commitment to national progress over partisan loyalty. « The homeland comes first, » he declared, framing his decision as a moral obligation rather than a political calculation. His alignment with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration marks a significant break from his past affiliation.

Once a cornerstone of Pastef’s presence in northern Senegal, Sow played a pivotal role in the party’s formative years. He helped organize Ousmane Sonko’s landmark 2017 visit to the region and collaborated closely with local leaders, including Ibrahima Sy, to expand the party’s grassroots support.
