Niger hosts pivotal Sahel-Russia strategic talks
Niamey became the diplomatic epicenter this past Wednesday, July 8, as the second round of high-level consultations between foreign affairs ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and their Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, unfolded in the Nigerien capital.
The Nigerien delegation was led by Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, while his counterparts from Mali (Abdoulaye Diop) and Burkina Faso (Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré) participated in the strategic discussions. Together, they finalized key agreements to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
Abdoulaye Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent exchanges between AES members and Russia, emphasizing the tangible outcomes achieved—from bolstering military collaboration to fostering economic and trade partnerships, all aligned with a shared diplomatic vision.
Unified approach to regional security
The AES ministers underscored the urgent need to scale up joint counterterrorism efforts, calling for intensified military cooperation to strengthen the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force. They also reiterated the importance of reinforcing economic partnerships to implement the Second-Year Roadmap adopted by the Confederation.
Russia reaffirms commitment to Sahel stability
Sergey Lavrov, speaking in Niamey, reaffirmed Russia’s unwavering support for the AES, stressing Moscow’s dedication to a mutually beneficial partnership. He emphasized Russia’s solid backing for regional security initiatives and sustainable development programs aimed at improving living conditions for local populations.
The latest round of talks follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, marking a key stop on Lavrov’s recent African tour.
