Togo and the United States deepen collaboration on local governance reforms

Strengthening cooperation between Togo and the United States in local governance, decentralization, and social cohesion took center stage during a meeting between the Togolese Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Customary Affairs and Kimberly M. McClure, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Togo.

During her courtesy visit to Lomé on June 2, 2026, the American diplomat engaged in discussions with the minister on shared priorities in territorial governance and local development. The talks highlighted key areas of collaboration, including progress in Togo’s decentralization process, capacity-building for local authorities, and strategies to enhance social cohesion through the involvement of traditional leaders and community actors.

The minister outlined the country’s administrative structure and outlined ongoing government reforms aimed at improving public service delivery at the local level. These efforts are designed to bridge the gap between state services and citizens, ensuring more responsive and inclusive governance.
