Benin and Mali strengthen bilateral ties with new solidarity agreement in Bamako

In a landmark diplomatic engagement, the President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, concluded a high-profile working visit to Bamako on June 9, 2026, where he engaged in extensive talks with Mali’s Head of State, General Assimi Goïta. The meeting, held at the Koulouba Palace, laid the groundwork for a renewed era of bilateral cooperation, culminating in the adoption of strategic resolutions aimed at deepening mutual solidarity.

Economic and trade bridges set to expand

The revitalization of economic ties took center stage during the discussions. Recognizing the pivotal role of the Port of Cotonou in supplying Mali with essential goods, both leaders committed to boosting bilateral trade. To formalize this commitment, they announced the immediate relaunch of the Bénin-Mali Joint High Commission, with plans for its second session to be held shortly. This initiative aims to streamline economic agreements and foster the seamless movement of goods and investments between the two nations.

Unified stance on security and sovereignty

With the Sahel region facing persistent security threats, Bénin and Mali have aligned their strategies to combat terrorism and organized crime more effectively. The leaders reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs—a stance that underscores their collective determination to uphold national autonomy on the global stage.

« The futures of our peoples are intertwined by history. Today, we are crafting a new chapter rooted in mutual respect and co-development, » stated the Béninese delegation, highlighting the shared vision driving this partnership.

A reciprocal visit to Cotonou on the horizon

Beyond political and economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections were identified as key priorities. In a gesture of goodwill, President Wadagni extended a formal invitation to General Goïta for an upcoming state visit to Cotonou. The Malian leader accepted the invitation, with diplomatic channels now working to finalize the visit dates.

This meeting in Bamako marks a pivotal moment in regional diplomacy, demonstrating that even amid shifting geopolitical landscapes, pragmatic cooperation remains a cornerstone of lasting partnership.
