Bénin parliament approves 2026 revised budget law
The National Assembly of Bénin has unanimously endorsed the revised finance law for the 2026 fiscal year. The landmark decision, taken during a plenary session, enables the government to fine-tune budgetary allocations in response to evolving administrative and policy priorities.
The revised budget law introduces targeted adjustments to align with the government’s restructuring efforts and strategic priorities. According to the Finance Commission’s report, presented by its chairperson, the revisions ensure that newly formed or reorganized ministries receive adequate funding to fulfill their mandates effectively.
Key adjustments and fiscal priorities
While maintaining the core financial balances set for 2026, the law reallocates budgetary resources to reflect the new government structure. These changes aim to enhance administrative efficiency, strengthen public policy coordination, and sustain focus on critical sectors such as social spending, agricultural development, employment initiatives, and public infrastructure investments.
Macroeconomic targets remain unchanged
The revised budget maintains a 7.5% growth projection for 2026, consistent with earlier forecasts. The fiscal deficit is projected at 3.1% of GDP, aligning closely with the 3% ceiling set by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
The law also incorporates measures to modernize the tax administration, including the digitization of audit procedures, improved taxpayer tracking, and updates to accommodate the digital economy. Additionally, it introduces provisions to include non-resident operators and digital platform revenues within the tax base, broadening the fiscal scope and strengthening domestic resource mobilization.
With parliamentary approval secured, the government is now set to implement the revised budget, ensuring that public administration and sectoral policies align with the nation’s evolving economic and social objectives.
